“Rick Scott Right to Refuse Extending Voter Registration Deadline”

The Hill carries an opinion piece by Professor Michael Morley laying out the reasons why Governor Rick Scott of Florida was correct in deciding that he had no authority or real cause to extend the voter registration deadline.  He states that in the Elections Emergency Act, the Florida Legislature gave the Governor “the authority to delay or postpone the election, not voter registration deadlines.”

In this legal environment, it is a novel thought to consider that the legislature may have actually had a reason to specifically not grant the executive branch (a governor or a president) the authority to simply change deadlines other than those specifically delineated in the Florida Election Code.
